Skelwith Bridge to Troutbeck

As he bounded along the riverside path from Skelwith Bridge, Joss barely had time even to register Skelwith Force. In his defence, the waterfall wasn’t at its finest; it rarely is in the middle of summer. It’s not a massive drop by Lakeland standards – little more than 16ft – but it does pack a punch to the senses after heavy rain as the broad, raging River Brathay forces its way through a suddenly narrower, rocky channel. It is fed by the becks that flow out of Little Langdale and Great Langdale – water with a fine pedigree, having fallen as rain on some of Lakeland’s most majestic peaks, including Bow Fell, Crinkle Crags, Wetherlam and the iconic Langdale Pikes. There’s a brief moment of respite as the becks reach flatter ground east of the village of Elterwater. Here they catch their breath, spread out to form a lake and then, strengthened by their newfound unity, continue downstream, over the waterfall and eventually out to Windermere.
